Name: | Possible orchard banks at Winbrook, Kelly |
---|
Summary
Linear earthwork banks are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. They are interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks for a possible orchard that had been removed by the late 19th century, or else the remains of narrow ridge and furrow for agricultural improvement.

Parallel linear banks, circa 5m wide, are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
The banks are closely spaced and are broadly parallel to the contours of the north-west facing combe slope. They occur in two defined areas that are located either side of a relict field boundary (MDV129980).
The visible banks do not correspond with features shown in this location on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although orchards are depicted in neighbouring land parcels to the south.
Orchards in this location support the interpretation that the earthworks are the possible remains of post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. Any orchards in this location had, however, been removed by the late-19th century. Some caution should be exercised as it is also possible the earthworks are the remains of narrow ridge and furrow for agricultural improvement, earthworks of which are possible visible on lidar visualisation to the west.
