Summary
Curvilinear banks, interpreted as relict field boundaries of potential medieval date, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2016. The field boundaries had passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Two curvilinear banks, circa 10 metres wide and orientated north-east to south-west, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2016.
The earthworks do not correspond with any curvilinear features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, but are closely in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The form of the earthworks supports the interpretation that they are relict field boundaries of potential medieval origin, that had been removed by the mid-19th century.
These earthworks, as well as that of MDV130014 to the west, were also identified from lidar data during the Understanding Landscapes Project and recorded as id 472.10.
Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 472.10 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
This large area of former open strip fields is largely overlain by the modern village of Lifton but several fragments of it can be seen on the sx-lrm3 dataset and an examination of the tithe map for Lifton(1) confirms the presence of a pattern of former strip field cultivation in the nineteenth century field pattern. The area enclosed is bounded to the east by the edge of the Lyd flood plain and to the south by the steep edge of Lifton Wood and the western edge by the limit of the characteristic cultivation marks on the sx-lrm3 dataset.
