A curvilinear ditch between 2 and 6 metres in width and circa 115 metres in length is visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. It is orientated approximately north-west to south-east in a west facing field west of Higher Horslett and immediately adjacent to the River Deer.
The ditch does not correspond to any features depicted on the available 19th century maps, however it is approximately in parallel with an adjacent depicted field boundary to the south. The plot is recorded as ‘Great Meadow’ in the Tithe Apportionment. The Ordnance Survey 25 inch Second Edition map depicts the land as rough or unimproved ground. The historic landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The ditch is tentatively interpreted as a former field boundary of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use prior to circa 1840. Alternatively, it could relate to post-medieval or 19th century drainage.
