Summary

Two parallel curvilinear banks are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013 south-east of Higher Horslett. The banks are tentatively interpreted as medieval to post-medieval field boundaries or possible post-medieval orchard banks, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The banks do not correspond to any depicted features, however one of the banks aligns with an adjacent field boundary and are adjacent to a small orchard plot.

Two curvilinear banks, one circa 80 metres and one circa 95 metres in length, and both between 8 and 12 metres in width are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The banks are orientated approximately east to west in a west facing field south-east of Higher Horslett.
The banks do not correspond to any features depicted on the available 19th century maps. One of the ditches aligns with a field boundary of a small irregular shaped plot to the immediate west, which is recorded as an orchard in the Tithe Apportionment. The historic landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The banks are tentatively interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin or possible remanent orchard banks of post-medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840.
