Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The depression does not correspond with any depicted features, however it is immediately adjacent to plot 816 recorded as a quarry.

An oval depression circa 11 by 20 metres is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The earthwork is situated on the edge of an east facing field south-east of Affaland Cross.
The depression does not correspond to any features depicted on the available historic maps, however it immediately adjacent to a small square plot depicted on the Tithe Map recorded as a quarry (Plot 816). The depression corresponds with a small fenced off area on the edge of the field depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. It is visible on aerial photography taken in 2002.
The depression is interpreted as an extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century origin, that ceased to be worked by the late-19th century.

Slight evidence of ground disturbance adjacent to modern agricultural disturbance by a gateway confirms two buildings which can be seen on the Tithe Map SX 33417 98662
