A sub-circular pit, circa 15 metres long by 13 metres wide, is visible as a shallow earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. It is also visible as a pale, irregularly shaped, vegetation or soil mark on 1940’s RAF aerial photographs and on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2019.
No features are depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps. The origin of the earthwork is uncertain, but it’s form and setting on the top of a hill could suggest that it is a post-medieval or 19th century dew pond, used to provide water for livestock. The possible pond may have passed out of use by the mid to late 19th century.
This feature has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey from rectified aerial photographs. The earthwork has, however, been re-transcribed during this survey from lidar data which provides better spatial accuracy.
