Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 2010, Berry Head Hotel Brixham Part 1: Archaeological Assessment, 3, 5, 8 (Report - Assessment). SDV362409.

Human remains were discovered in the west garden area during the time of Revd. Lyte who leased the building from 1823. It is likely that the bones represent victims of a shipwreck, possibly from the Transport Ship Tiger which was wrecked off Berry Head in February 1745. Bodies are said to have been buried in a mound in a 'quiet hollow' off a 'small cove just east of Shorestone'. This is identified with the hotel grounds.
Given the amount of ground disturbance it is considered unlikely that any in situ human remains would be found during the proposed development works, although it is possible that unstratified human bone may be found.
