Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 1 (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.
A curvilinear ditch circa 180 metres in length and circa 5 metres in width is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007. The ditch is orientated north-west to south-east on a moderate west facing slope through Ludbrook Wood south-east of Denham Bridge.
The ditch does not correspond to any features depicted on the available historic or modern maps. The ditch aligns approximately with a track or path through Didham Wood depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map to the south-east. It adjoins a dog-leg in the field boundary of a plot adjacent to Denham Bridge recorded as ‘Bridge Park’ in the Tithe Apportionment to the north-west. A dog-leg in the road is depicted in the north corner of ‘Bridge Park’.
The ditch is interpreted as a section of post-medieval or 19th century path or trackway that may have connected Didham Wood to Denham Bridge to the north-east or the road to the north, and that passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
