Name: | Field boundaries at Blowiscombe Farm, Buckland Monachorum. |
---|
Summary
A curvilinear bank is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013 immediately north-west of Blowiscombe Farm. The bank appears to form two joined parallel field boundaries of probable medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.

A curvilinear bank forming two joined parallel features between 40 and 50 metres in length and circa 20 metres apart is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013. The bank is situated in a south-west facing field immediately north-west of Blowiscombe Farm east of Milton Combe.
The two parallel features have the appearance of being joined and forming an enclosure, however this is probably a result of earthwork spread from agricultural activity and the establishment of a modern track to the north.
The bank does not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps, however the main two features are in parallel with adjacent depicted field boundaries. It is situated within a plot recorded as ‘Blowiscombe Park’ in the Tithe Apportionment. The historic landscape is characterised as post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements.
The bank is interpreted as two parallel field boundaries of probable medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840 and have the appearance of being joined from subsequent activity.
