A series of parallel curvilinear banks circa 10 metres across and circa 5 metres apart are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004. The earthworks are orientated approximately north-west to south-east within a south-facing field north-west of Buckland Abbey.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps. The plot is recorded simply as ‘Little Paddock’ in the Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is depicted in the field directly to the south, with an 18th century irrigation system recorded within (MDV21351). A ha-ha is recorded to the north (MDV67194).
The banks are interpreted as post-medieval planting ridges for orchard trees that passed out of use prior to circa 1840. Alternatively, the earthworks may relate to drainage.
