An irregularly shaped pit, circa 80 meters long by 42 meters wide, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013, at the eastern extent of Lumburn aqueduct.
The pit does not correspond with any features in this location on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although several structures associated with a lock-keepers cottage are shown within its limits.
It is interpreted as one of two possible early 19th century quarries associated with the construction of Lumburn aqueduct (MDV4068). The pit had been later reused for the location of the lock-keepers cottage (MDV123103). The second quarry is present at the western extent of the aqueduct (MDV116153).
