Full description

Stephenson, B., 2012, Cranbrook: New Community, Ancient Landscape, 10 (Article in Serial). SDV351768.

Excavations by Foundations Archaeology in advance of development at Cranbrook revealed a pit to the south-west of an Early Bronze Age ring ditch. Within the pit was a plough-damaged beaker vessel.

Hood, A. + King, D., 2019, Early Mesolithic Occupation, a Beaker Ring Ditch with Probable Burials and Probable Middle Bronze Age Activity at Cranbrook, Devon, 10; Fig 7 (Article in Serial). SDV364793.

Approximately 16m west of the ring ditch was a shallow, sub-oval pit (Pit 2013), approximately 2.2m by 1.4m by 0.15m deep. Within its fill was a crushed Beaker which had probably been buried intact. Part of the top was missing, presumably as a result of plough truncation. A single Early Bronze Age flint flake was recovered from within the Beaker. A fragment of hazelnut shell from the fill yielded a radiocarbon date range of 1750-1619 cal BC; however, in view of the shallow depth of the pot this may have been intrusive. It is possible that, as with the burial pit within the ring ditch, the Beaker and lithic artefact were originally associated with an inhumation of which no trace survived.
