HER Number:MDV130397
Name:Field system north-west of Crowndale Farm, Tavistock

Summary

Earthworks of curvilinear and linear banks and ditches, between 2-12 metres wide and broadly orientated north to south and east to west, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2016.
The visible banks and ditches, which typically flank one another, occupy an area of circa 12.5 hectares of moderate north-east, east and south-east facing slope. Towards their southern extent and to the immediate west of Crowndale Farm, the earthworks define several rectilinear land parcels up to 0.85 metres in length.
The earthworks do not correspond with any linear or curvilinear features depicted in this location on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, or on later available historic maps but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements. The earthworks have been truncated by the Tavistock to Bere Alston railway (MDV72928) and so clearly predate its construction in the late 19th century.
They are interpreted as relict field boundaries of a field system of potential medieval origin, the field boundaries having been removed by the late 19th century.
The earthworks correspond with the records of three field boundaries that have been recorded in this location by the Understanding Landscapes Project, including 339.1, 339.2 and 339.3. They are interpreted as being part of the same field system and so have been incorporated into this single record.
This field system may be associated with field boundaries visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and recorded during the Tamar Valley NMP project. One of the field boundaries from this survey at SX47037318 closely corresponds with a field boundary from this survey and may form part of the same feature.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 339.1-3 (Interpretation). SDV363949.

339.1
A field boundary crosses this field and terminates in the field on the other side of the disused railway line. It passes through an already identified boundary MDV114335 and was clearly in place before the railway was built. SX 46835 73123 to SX 47389 73300.
339.2
Field boundary joins the one identified in 339.1 not shown on epoch 1. SX 47224 73299.
339.3
Field boundary not shown on epoch 1. SX 47310 72979.
