A series of parallel curvilinear banks between circa 6 and 12 metres in width are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. They are situated across several south-west facing fields surrounding Short Burn Farm and orientated north to south and north-east to south-west.
The banks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps, however many of the banks are parallel to depicted field boundaries. The historic landscape is characterised as ‘medieval enclosures based on strip fields’ and ‘post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements’.
The banks are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval origin, that formed a strip field system and that passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 405.12 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
The earthworks have been interpreted as a strip field system.
