Irregularly shaped pits, between 9-48 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013.
The pits partly correspond with, but extend beyond, earthworks depicted and labelled as ‘Quarry’ and as ‘Old Quarry’ on the late-19th and early-20th century First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps. Earthworks are also shown in this location on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
They are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century quarries that had probably passed out of use by the early-20th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

The pits partly correspond with, but extend beyond, earthworks shown in this location.
