Name:Field boundaries and enclosure south of Short Burn Farm, Milton Abbot

Summary

Curvilinear banks and a curvilinear ditch are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 south of Short Burn Farm. They are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin, in part forming a square enclosure, that passed out of use by the mid-19th century. Alternatively, the longest section may have been a trackway.

An east to west orientated curvilinear bank circa 585 metres in length with banks forming a square enclosure 40 metres across on its northern side is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. A short curvilinear earthwork ditch cuts across the far western end of the bank. The earthworks are situated on the north facing side of a plateau of land south of Short Burn Farm.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps. The ditch spans the width of a field depicted on the Tithe Map. The historic landscape is characterised as post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements.
The banks are interpreted as field boundaries that form a small field enclosure of medieval to post-medieval origin. Alternatively, the long section of bank may be interpreted as a trackway of medieval to post-medieval origin. The ditch is interpreted as a field boundary post-dating the bank and that passed out of use prior to 1840.
