Summary

A curvilinear bank and flanking ditches are visible as distinct earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013 east of Dunterton. The earthworks are interpreted as a possible trackway of medieval to post-medieval origin, that passed out of use prior to circa 1840.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond to any depicted features. It appears to lead to a narrow projecting section of a field recorded as ‘Eastern Chapel Park’.

Environment Agency, 2000-2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Environment Agency LAST RETURN 20-FEB-2005 (Cartographic). SDV363954.

A curvilinear bank and curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

A curvilinear bank and curvilinear ditches are faintly visible as earthworks due to crop vegetation.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 1 (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

A curvilinear bank circa 380 metres in length and between 6 and 20 metres in width is visible as a distinct earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013. The bank is flanked on either side by ditches between 10 and 25 metres in width.
The earthworks curve from the north to the south-east on a south to south-east facing slope leading into a shallow combe east of Dunterton. The site of a medieval chapel is recorded near its south-east end (MDV2691) along with a small 19th century building (MDV68417).
The bank does not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps. It extends across a plot recorded as ‘Western Chapel Park’ in the Tithe Apportionment and appears to lead into a narrow projecting section of an adjacent field recorded as ‘Eastern Chapel Park’. It may have joined a road to the north (MDV126588). The historic landscape is characterised as ‘post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements’.
The earthworks are interpreted as a possible trackway of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use prior to 1840. It is possible the trackway was associated with the chapel. The situation of the feature is unsual for a trackway however, and it is also possible the earthworks are natural, or have been altered from a natural feature in some way.
