Three oval and circular depressions, one circa 10 by 13 metres, one circa 10 by 11 metres and one circa 18 metres across, are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005. The depressions are situated on west facing land above the River Tamar south of Hardstone Cottage.
The earthworks are situated within a plot recorded as ‘Carthamartha Coppice’ in the Tithe Apportionment, which despite its name is recorded as comprising fir trees and was therefore probably replanted as a fir plantation by this time rather than managed as a coppice woodland.
The Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map shows the plot as under broadleaf woodland. Subsequent historic and modern maps and aerial photographs consistently show the plot as woodland.
A quarry is recorded 50 metres to the north (MDV68413).
The depressions are interpreted as extractive pits of post-medieval to early 19th century origin.
