Sub-circular and irregularly shaped pits and a bank, between 8-30 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010 and 2013.
A rectangular structure is depicted within the limits of one of the visible earthwork pits at SX44137018 on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map. This structure corresponds with the record of a wheel pit (MDV72840). The remaining earthworks do not correspond with any other features on this map, although two shafts which are probably associated (MDV72841 & MDV72839) are also recorded in this area.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century mine workings associated with Wheal Russell Mine, the workings in this location having probably passed out of use by the late-19th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of Morwell Wood.
