Name: | Extractive pits or shafts within Morwell Wood, Gulworthy |
---|
Summary
Earthworks of six sub-oval and elongated pits, interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century extractive pits and/or shafts, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010. The earthworks are possibly associated with mine workings attached to Wheal Russell Mine and had probably been abandoned by the late-19th century.

A north-east to south-west alignment of six sub-oval and elongated pits, between 5-20 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although features that are labelled as ‘Russell United Mine (Copper)’ are shown in the surrounding area.
The pits are therefore interpreted as the extractive pits and/or shafts of post-medieval or early to mid-19th century mine workings that are possibly associated with Wheal Russell Mine (MDV22886). The workings in this location had probably passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of Morwell Wood.
