A group of sub-circular and sub-oval earthwork pits, between 4-13 metres long, is visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although earthworks labelled as ‘Shaft’ are shown in proximity to the east and west.
They are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early to mid-19th century extractive pits and/or shafts probably associated with Wheal Russell Mine (MDV22886). They are likely to have passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century.
A record for costean pits (MDV72769) has also been made in this location and it is possible that the earthworks transcribed as part of this survey are related to these.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of Morwell Wood.
