Name:Banks west of Buckland Abbey, Buckland Monachorum

Summary

A series of curvilinear banks and ditches are visible as distinct earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007, 2013 and 2019 west of Buckland Abbey. The earthworks are interpreted as lynchets or field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin. One of the earthworks may be a trackway.

A series of curvilinear banks between circa 8 and 20 metres in width, one with sections of flanking ditch are visible as distinct earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007, 2013 and 2019. The earthworks are orientated mainly east to west forming an unusual configuration on a south-west facing slope west of Buckland Abbey.
One of the banks is situated directly adjacent and parallel to an extant field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map. The bank probably pre-dates this field boundary, and the course of the latter may be dictated by the presence of the bank.
The earthworks are situated within a plot recorded as ‘Great Deer & Blandwell’s Park’ in the Tithe Apportionment. A deer park is recorded as part of the Buckland Abbey estate to the east (MDV67196), the park estimated to be located west of the park wall. The historic landscape is characterised as ‘post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements’.
The earthworks are interpreted as field boundaries or lynchets of medieval to post-medieval origin. The northernmost bank with flanking ditch is interpreted as a possible trackway. It is possible the earthworks were associated with the deer park.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 270.1 (DS) and 270.1 (JM) (Interpretation). SDV363949.

The banks have been interpreted as boundary banks/field boundaries with possible trackways.
