Summary
Sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits and banks, interpreted as post-medieval or early-19th century quarries with associated spoil heaps, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. Sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, between 12-35 metres long, and banks, circa 10 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which shows this area as comprising orchard. One of the pits does, however, partly correspond with an earthwork labelled as ‘Quarry’ on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map. An earthwork is also shown in this location on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early-19th century quarries with associated spoil heaps that had probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century, by which time the redundant workings had been given over to an orchard.
Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.
An earthwork is shown in this location.
