Summary

Two curvilinear banks and a curvilinear ditch are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013 south-west of Buckland Abbey. The earthworks are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any depicted features, however they align with depicted field boundaries to the south and south-west. The plot is recorded as ‘New Orchard’.

Two curvilinear banks both between 3 and 6 metres in width and a curvilinear ditch circa 4 metres in width flanking one of the banks are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013. The earthworks are orientated both north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east in a north-west facing field south-west of Buckland Abbey.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps, however they do align with depicted field boundaries to the south and south-west. The plot is recorded as ‘New Orchard’ in the Tithe Apportionment.
The north-east to south-west aligned earthworks are visible on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s and from the late 20th to early 21st century.
The earthworks are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use by the mid-19th century, possibly when the orchard was established.
