Name:Orchard banks at Newpark, Bere Ferrers

Summary

Parallel earthwork banks, circa 4.5m wide, are visible on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the south-west facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.52 hectares.
The visible banks correspond with land parcel 1772 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as an orchard on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown here on the early-20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map, although the fruit trees have been almost completely removed by the 1940s, suggesting that it had mostly passed out of use by this time.
An orchard in this location supports the interpretation that the earthworks are the remains of post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage.
A second possible area of orchard banks have been recorded circa 65 metres to the north-east (MDV130669).

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data (Interpretation). SDV363949.

Past orchard shown on 1904 Second Edition Ordnance Survey map.
