Name:Extractive pit at Weir Quay, Bere Ferrers

Summary

An irregularly shaped pit, interpreted as a possible early to mid-19th century extractive pit associated with The Tamar Smelting Works, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. The pit had probably passed out of use by the late-19th century.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 14 metres long by 12 metres wide, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthwork does not correspond with any pit features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps. A ‘Chinmey’ (MDV78236) which is associated with the Tamar Smelting Works (MDV69020) is, however, shown in proximity to the west on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a possible early to mid-19th century extractive pit associated with the Tamar Smelting Works, that had probably passed out of use by the late-19th century.
