(28/09/2007) Shafts adits and other surface evidence of copper extraction at Virtuous Lady Mine. A number of open adits are located in the cliff face west of Tavy Cottage, close by the River Walkham, some of which are currently covered by laurel. William's Engine shaft is marked on the Abandoned Mine Plan (Devon Record Office AMP R80B) to the west of Tavy Cottage. Its location is likely to be at the foot of the cliff where an indentation in the ground may represent the capped shaft at SX 4723 6979. The cliff face here has been consolidated by building a revetment against it. A short length of adit runs off into the rock driving south. A particularly large adit opening north of William's Shaft has a stone revetted level platform built just outside the portal which would have served as a working area. Material was trammed from here onto two large spoil dumps and a dressing floor to the south west. The course of the tramway survives in part as a flat topped linear bank.
Several capped shafts are alleged to exist within the grounds and gardens of Tavy Cottage, though their precise whereabouts cannot be accurately plotted, because the ground has been reclaimed. (Newman, P., 28-SEP-2007, EH Archaeological Field Investigation).
