Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features in this location.

Earthworks of irregularly shaped pits are visible as earthworks.

Four irregularly shaped pits, between 11-30 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map or on later available historic maps, which show this are as comprising woodland.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early to mid-19th century extractive pits that had passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of Hallowell Wood.
