Two parallel curvilinear banks circa 5 metres across and circa 5 metres apart are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. The earthworks are orientated approximately north to south within a south-facing field south of Woolacombe Farm.
The earthworks do not correspond directly with any features depicted on the available historic maps. The plot is recorded as ‘Lower Orchard’ in the Tithe Apportionment and continues to be depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First and Second Edition maps. Aerial photographs dating from the 1940s show the orchard has passed out of use by this time.
The banks are interpreted as post-medieval planting ridges for orchard trees that passed out of use in the early 20th century. Alternatively, the earthworks may relate to drainage.
