Sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits and banks, between 7-40 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
The earthworks are situated within land parcels 686 and 691 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. These are recorded as ‘Rookery’ and as ‘Park Nursery’, respectively, on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment and are probably associated with Warleigh House.
The pits and banks do not correspond with any features on this map, although two earthworks labelled as ‘Quarry’ and ‘Old Quarry’ are shown in proximity to the east within The Rookery on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
They are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or early to mid-19th century quarries with associated spoil heaps that had probably passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover of The Rookery.
