Name: | Possible field system north of Warleigh Barton, Bickleigh |
---|
Summary
Curvilinear banks, interpreted as possible relict field boundaries of a medieval field system, are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. The field boundaries had been removed by the mid-19th century, by which time the layout of the surrounding field pattern had evidently been re-organised.

Curvilinear banks, circa 16 metres wide and orientated north-east to south-west, are visible as subtle earthworks that are probably denuded by ploughing on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, nor are they in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern which is characterised as post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements.
The form of the earthworks supports the interpretation that they are possible relict field boundaries of a medieval field system. The field boundaries had been removed by the mid-19th century, by which time the layout of the surrounding field pattern had evidently been re-organised. Elements of this later field system have been recorded as part of the Tamar Valley NMP project as MDV114230.
