Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Gas works' shown on 19th century map on the north side of the railway in an irregular shaped enclosure with several adjoining buildings and a circular feature.

Moretonhampstead Gasworks at SX759856. In 1868 the Moretonhampstead Gas Light Coal and Coke Company was formed opening in 1869. By 1899 the works was leased to Willey & Company of Exeter. Acquired by the Devon Gas Association on its formation in 1906. There were five miles of mains in 1914. Gas production ceased on the 14th February 1961. Most of the site was sold for £1,500 to H.A. Saunders Ltd on 24th August 1962. The site of the two holders was sold on the 6th February 1979, the last portion of the gasworks land. Some building appears to survive, although the condition is not known.
