Full description

HANKIN, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV144143.

Vis=-/3/1977 (hankin). A 19th century waterwheel stands in its pit on the north-facing side of the modern outbuildings belonging to stowford farm. The leat does not now pass through the wheelpit, but the wheel was probably breast shot; made of wood with iron rims. The rim facing the field to the north bears the name "w langler rattery". The wheel was fed from a stone-lined leat originating from the lukesland estate three-quarters mile to the north.1 little is known about the wheel, but it was probably set up some time after 1862 when the old corn mills of stowford lower down the erme were swept away and only paper mills continued there.2 the tithe map, 1838, shows the leat following the same course as it does today, down to the lower part of stowford, but there is no mention of a mill at stowford farm. The wheel probably provided power for farm machinery.
