Summary
An irregularly shaped pit, interpreted as a possible post-medieval or early to mid-19th century extractive pit, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. The extractive pit had probably passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 158 metres long by 32 metres wide, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The pit closely corresponds with land parcel 637 on the mid-19th Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Coppice’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This coppice, as well as earthworks, are also shown in this location on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, and on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a possible post-medieval or early to mid-19th century extractive pit that had passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century, by which time the redundant workings had been given over to woodland.
The earthwork is not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.
The pit closely corresponds with earthworks within a coppice.
