Sub-oval, sub-circular and irregularly shaped pits, between 10-27 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
One of the northern-most pits corresponds with an earthwork labelled as ‘Quarry’ on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century quarries that had possibly passed out of use by late-19th century.
The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to the thick tree cover of Haxter Wood.
