Full description

Grinsell, L. V., 1978, Dartmoor Barrows, 141, Harford 26 (Article in Serial). SDV273224.

Hankin, C. F., 1980, An Archaeological Check-List for Harford (Un-published). SDV361875.

Cairn 1 - a dilapidated mound of uneven height. Turf and stones with traces of an enclosing circle, one stone of which, on the south side, stands to a height of 0.56 metres diameter 12 to 13.5 metres, height 0.30 metres.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on 1946 aerial photograph.

Turner, J. R., 1990, Ring Cairns, Stone Circles and Related Monuments on Dartmoor, 77, F3 (Article in Serial). SDV229817.

Encircled cairn consisting of a ring of orthostats 14 metres in diameter around cairn 10 metres diameter and 0.5 metres high. Only five stones of ring remain on south, north and east sides.

Butler, J., 1993, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Four - The South-East, 30-32, Map 53, Figure 53.9 (Monograph). SDV337765.

Cairn '8' at SX64505969 of circa 15 metres diameter by 0.4 metres high is much damaged with a very uneven surface. It was surrounded by a retaining circle of large slabs four of which remain visible, one erect, one leaning and two fallen. Others probably now lie buried.

National Monuments Record, 2020, Pastscape, 441303, SX65NW32 (Website). SDV363416.

SX 64545971 Cairn with hollow at centre and traces of a retaining circle sited on a hill slope. Diameter 7m, height
0.3m.

Visited 1976. (1)

The cairn lies at about 286m OD and has been severely mutilated. It apears to have had a level base and a diameter of circa 11m. It now has a height of 0.7m on its SW side. The north and west sides give the appearance of foundations of a late building, although this may be fortuitous.

Around the cairn are 4 large slabs, one of which is set in the ground to a height of 0.6m (see plan). The area is fairly stone free and these stones are probably part of a former surrounding stone circle. (See GP).

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

Feature shown on modern mapping.

Historic England, 2021, National Heritage List for England, 1012442 (National Heritage List for England). SDV364016.

This cairn, one of two north-west of Harford Moor Gate, is 13 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres in height, it is turf-covered and has a retaining kerb. (Scheduled polygon shown to the north-east of the feature).
