Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the early-mid 13th century, based on historical documentation, where it is recorded with a number of name variations. Tithe Map shows the farmstead comprising a number of scattered buildings, a number of which appear to have been retained, although the farm has been extended from the 20th century onwards.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, 3901 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Lutford is depicted on the Tithe Map; farmstead consists of a collection of scattered buildings; 8 are grouped close together at the northern end of the farm, with one isolated within enclosure to the south. Three other joined enclosure plots depicted.

Late 19th century depiction of Lutsford largely matches the earlier Tithe Map depiction, except one building (to far north-east of site) is no longer shown.

Lutsford is recorded numerous times in historical documentation, including as 'Ludekeford' in 1249, 'Lottekeford' (1301), 'Luttekisforde' (1319), 'Luttisford' (1570) and 'Luttoc's ford'.

Lutsford is first recorded in 1249 as Ludekeford (Gover et al, 1931).

The modern map shows some additional buildings / alterations to the 19th century buildings has taken place since the historic map depictions, but a number of those buildings shown on the Tithe Map appear to have survived in some form. Additonally, the farmstead has been developed extensively, with a collection of large modern buildings to the north and east.
