Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the late 12th century, based on historical documentation, where it is recorded with a number of name variations. Tithe Map shows the farmstead comprising
a number of scattered buildings, a number of which appear to have been retained,
although the farm has been extended from the 20th century onwards.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Cheristow is depicted on the Tithe Map (plot 748); farmstead consists of two main buildings with an adjoining yard to east. Some smaller outbuilding structures shown between.

Late 19th century depiction of Cheristow largely matches the earlier Tithe Map depiction, except that a range of buildings has been added at the northern side of the yard, adjoining the existing building at the north-west and bordering the north and east sides of the yard. Some alteration to southern buildings shown.

Cheristow is recorded numerous times in historical documentation, including as 'Chircstoua' (1167), 'Cheirestowe' (1189), 'Cheristowe' (1301 and 'Churstowe'. Name may have links to the nearby chapel.

Cheristow is first referred to in 1167 as Chircstoua. There were 5 tenants in 1566.
