Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the late 14th century, based on historical documentation. The Tithe Map shows the farmstead comprising a number of buildings in yard area, with several additional buildings within enclosures to the south of the yard. A number of these have been retained, although the farm has been extended from the 20th century onwards with some large buildings to the south-east of the yard.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, 446 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Pitt is depicted on the Tithe Map (plot 446); farmstead consists of a group of eight buildings including four within enclosures to the south of the yard area. There are five buildings scattered around the yard of the farm, including dwelling (MDV75001) to the north-west.

Late 19th century depiction of Pitt largely matches the earlier Tithe Map depiction, with some alterations to the buildings to the south.

Pitt is first recorded in la Pytte in 1301. There were 3 tenants in 1566 (citing Gover et al and Pearse Chope 1902, 450).

The modern map shows some large buildings added since the 19th century map to the south-east of the farm. These have replaced some of the earlier buildings.
