Full description

National Monuments Record, 1976, NMR SX6459, 1/226-228 (Aerial Photograph). SDV168294.

Photograph taken on 22nd April 1976.

Hankin, C. F., 1980, Tin extraction on the Butter Brook, Sheet 90/254 (Worksheet). SDV144143.

(12/12/1980) SX 644 592. Butterbrook, formerly Shillake.
No obvious tinners' waste heaps, but all the valley of the Butterbrook Stream on the open moor shows signs of disturbance - some dating from 1914 when the Butterbrook Reservoir was built.
A blowing house at SX 6422 5921 (MDV2848) is a short distance downstream from the site of probable tin workings.
There is little doubt that this is the site of the 17th century tin workings at 'Shillake', the name associated with other tin workings at 'Hangynsilf' which must be Hangershell Rock just above the head-springs of the Butterbrook (citing T. Greeves who notes 17th century tin sites in Harford).

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Area of streamwork extending from SX64365923 to SX64565925 visible on aerial photograph.

Butler, J., 1993, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Four - The South-East, 19, Map 53, Figure 53.2 (Monograph). SDV337765.

'Streamworks' shown on both side of Butter Brook to the west of the 'plantation'.

Environment Agency WMS, 1998-2016, LiDAR DTM data JPEG image (1m resolution) (Cartographic). SDV360208.

Area of streamwork visible on Lidar data.

Greeves, T. A. P., unknown, Records of 17th century Tin Sites in Harford (Report - non-specific). SDV144932.
