Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Surrounding field boundaries are indicative of a former medieval strip field system, and are parallel to the earthwork ditch.

A curvilinear ditch is visible as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The ditch is orientated approximately north to south and does not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps. The ditch is parallel to surrounding curving field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map, which reflect a former medieval strip field system. The historic landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The ditch is interpreted as a former medieval field boundary, that formed part of a strip field system, and that passed out of use prior to circa 1840.
