HER Number:MDV131444
Name:Earthworks on Shaugh Moor

Summary

Two trial diggings visible as sub-square shallow pits on Shaugh Moor. At SX55566282 and SX55346263 they measure 12.0m and 10.0m across respectively. Each has had the turf and peat layer dug out and the stones and boulders moved to the edges on a slight irregular bank. These features are probably associated with the projected exploitation of the China Clay reserves in this moorland area.

(13/03/1998) Two trial diggings visible as sub-square shallow pits on Shaugh Moor. Small isolated shallow trenches have recently been machine dug in the general area of these pits, again probably for prospecting purposes. The limits of the china clay workings on Shaugh Moor were extended in April 1998 and consequently most of these trial diggings were absorbed within the new boundary. Investigated and surveyed at 1:2500 for the RCHME Shaugh Moor project in 1998. Collections number 1101512.
