A large earthwork depression is visible on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 on the north edge of Batty's Moor. The depression corresponds with an orchard plot recorded in the Tithe Survey as 'Pit in Jones Close' (Plot 52). The plot is depicted as an orchard until the mid-20th century, after which it established as woodland. Modern maps show a pond within the plot. The depression is interpreted as a post-medieval to early 19th century extractive pit, that ceased extraction prior to circa 1840 after which the plot was planted as an orchard, and eventually filled with water to become a pond.
