Sims, R., Knight, S. & Houghton, E., 2020-2021, East Devon AONB Lidar Assessment and Desk based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV363914.

A series of cloesly parallel linear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The banks are orientated north to south and are bisected by perpendicular ditches, of probable later date. Two clearly defined north to south orientated ditches are also visible. The plot is on a gentle north facing slope and recorded as 'Higher Orchard' in the Tithe Survey. It is depicted as an orchard thereafter. The plot continues to be an orchard, with evidence of some new tree planting in the modern period in the west part of the plot.
The banks are interpreted as planting ridges for orchard trees of post-medieval to early 19th century origin, that have been in continuous subsequent use. Perpendicular ditches are likely later in date and may have been created by access, and the north to south orientated ditches could be earlier plot division.
