Full description

Hughes, S. + Rainbird, P., 2016, The New Cranbrook Watermain: Post Excavation Assessment (Report - Assessment). SDV364434.

A staged programme of archaeological works comprising evaluation trenching, excavation and
watching brief along the route of the new Cranbrook water main, East Devon, was undertaken by AC archaeology between June and November 2011. The work was commissioned by South West Water following consultation with Devon County Council Historic Environment Team.

This trench was positioned on flat ground across a meandering approximately northeast to southwest aligned linear hollow visible on the surface. The trench contained a wide linear Palaeochannel (F3310) and a probable pit (F3307).

The palaeochannel contained a sequence of deposits that comprised a thick basal deposit of dark grey silty clay alluvial accumulation (3304) that contained abundant preserved organic material. One of the deposits contained a sherd of medieval pottery.
