Three ditches were recorded in Trench 58 (Field J) during an archaeological trench evaluation on land to the east of Axminster. The ditches ranged in date from possibly prehistoric to post-medieval. Ditch 5805 was 0.70m wide and 0.15m deep. Finds included a piece of residual flint and a sherd of late medieval pottery. However, it was notably different in composition from the other ditches and therefore potentially earlier in date.
The ditch is suggested to be part of a potential area of late prehistoric activity that includes the features between Trenches 49, 51 and 58 in Fields H and J. Located on the higher ground within the proposed development area, the features may reflect typical agricultural division of the landscape in the late prehistoric period.
