Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The plots are recorded as 'Roadwill Orchard' (Plot 2075) and 'Woolpit Orchard' (Plot 2077).

The plot is depicted as an orchard.

Sporadic trees are visible, indicating the orchard has largely passed out of use.

Two areas of closely parallel linear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The eastern area of banks are approximately north-east to south-west orientated and correspond with a plot recorded as 'Roadwill Orchard' on the Tithe Map. The western area of banks are approximately north-west to south-east orientated and correspond with a plot recorded as 'Woolpit Orchard' on the Tithe Map. Both areas are depicted as a singular large plot of orchard on the First and Second Edition OS maps. Sporadic trees are visible on aerial photographs dating from the 1940's and the orchard is no longer depicted on mid-20th century maps.
The banks are interpreted as planting ridges for orchard trees of post-medieval to 19th century origin, that passed out of use by the mid-20th century.
