Sims, R., Knight, S. & Houghton, E., 2020-2021, East Devon AONB Lidar Assessment and Desk based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV363914.

Three large earthwork depressions are visible on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. One of the depressions corresponds with a plot recorded as 'Marl Pit' on the Tithe Map (Plot 2015), which is depicted as woodland on subsequent maps. The northernmost depression corresponds with a plot recorded as 'Pond Orchard' on the Tithe Map (Plot 2007), which remained as orchard until the mid-20th century. The southernmost depression corresponds with a coppice plot.
The depressions are interpreted as extractive pits, probably for marl, of post-medieval to 19th century origin, two of which probably passed out of use prior to circa 1840 - one likely filled with water and used as a pond, and one which passed out of use by the late 19th century.
