Several curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The ditches are orientated north-west to south-east, approximately following the contours of the southwest facing slope. They appear to lead from a natural north-east to south-west orientated flush also visible as an earthwork and on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s. The ditches do not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps and are situated in a plot recorded as 'Northleigh Meadow' in the Tithe Survey. They are interpreted as irrigation gutters of a 19th to early 20th century catch meadow system.
Catch meadows abstracted from springs or streams and redistributed it along channels or gutters to irrigate combe slopes rather than valley floors. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
