Full description

Probert, S. + Fletcher, M. + Newman, P., 1998, Willsworthy Training Area, Peter Tavy, Devon: An Archaeological survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (Report - Survey). SDV350638.

(01/08/1998) Centred SX 55538154. The remains of a former range warning flagpole, Range Warden's lookout and a N to S line of slit trenches lie on the summit of Standon Hill. The flagpole, at SX 55538154, consists of three concrete blocks in a triangular formation around a wooden stump set in concrete. Each of the blocks possesses a single eye bolt and served as an anchor point for the pole. To the S of the pole, at SX 5554 8148, on the edge of the large prehistoric tor cairn are the tumbled remains of a former Range Warden's lookout. This consists of little more than an amorphous pile of stones, some with mortar still attached. Its modern replacement stands nearby.
The slit trenches form a N to S line between SX 55548171 and SX 55558150. They comprise a series of narrow silted trenches around 0.7m wide and 0.4n deep. The length of each varies due to the amount of sub-surface stone.
